Breakfast in Japan

A slower start, a Japanese breakfast, and the hotels behind my dining stories.

I have mainly introduced these hotels through dinner, with a few lunch and stay stories along the way. Here I bring together their published breakfast options while I prepare my own breakfast reviews for the coming days.

Why I recommend planning the morning meal

Finding the sit-down breakfast you have in mind can take some planning in Japan. A restaurant you enjoyed at dinner may not open in the morning, and the hotel’s breakfast venue can be a different restaurant. Choosing breakfast with your hotel stay is a convenient way to avoid searching before an early departure.

There are other options too: cafés, bakeries, convenience stores and restaurant chains serve morning meals. The challenge is finding the style, location and opening time that fit your day. JNTO’s breakfast guide explains both hotel breakfasts and these everyday alternatives.

The Japanese way

Small dishes, a complete morning meal

A Japanese breakfast often brings several small dishes together. At hotels, you may find a prepared set or choose Japanese and Western dishes from a buffet.

Rice & soup

Rice and miso soup form a familiar starting point.

Fish & eggs

Grilled fish and an egg dish can accompany the rice.

Small sides

Tofu, vegetables, pickles and seaweed add variety.
