Rating guide, details & sources

These are four independent editorial planning scales, not Tabelog scores or scores from any other platform. Higher means more affordable, more flexible booking, easier access from the nearest practical railway station, or greater local rarity respectively. They are not averaged into an overall score. N/A means closed or insufficient evidence for that criterion; it is not zero.

  • Affordability: Affordability uses the upper displayed regular meal price per person, excluding admission, drinks, lodging and extras: 5 = up to ¥2,000; 4 = up to ¥5,000; 3 = up to ¥10,000; 2 = up to ¥20,000; 1 = above ¥20,000. Estimated or historical menu prices remain estimates.
  • Booking flexibility: Booking flexibility: 5 = public online booking; 4 = phone-only booking; 3 = selected menus or prior-day booking; 2 = fixed departure or attraction-ticket gate; 1 = no individual reservations. This describes the reviewed meal's documented booking conditions, not live availability or measured competition for tables. Unconfirmed dining eligibility is N/A.
  • Station access: Station access is measured from the nearest practical railway station, not the entire journey from a main city station: 5 = walk up to 5 minutes; 4 = walk up to 10 minutes; 3 = walk up to 20 minutes; 2 = bus up to 20 minutes; 1 = bus over 20 minutes. Main-station routes and longer journey details remain in the assessment. Hanagoyomi's rating uses the approximately 5-minute walk from Miyanoshita.
  • Local rarity: Local rarity: 1 = ubiquitous format; 2 = common format; 3 = less common; 4 = specialist format; 5 = documented exceptionally scarce format. Current evidence uses only 2–4; no restaurant-supply census establishes a 5. This is a qualitative comparison of local cuisine and dining formats, not taste, prestige or an overall quality score.

Restaurant evaluation

Spend per person
Current 5- and 7-course menus include tax and service; drinks and beef upgrades are extra. Ken’s historical bill was ¥20,950 per person (¥41,900 for two).
Reservation difficulty
Public online and telephone reservations, including seat-only dinner bookings; 2-hour seating. The separate ¥31,000 chef-speciality menu requires 10 days’ notice, which should not be applied to standard dinner.
Access from main stations
From Yokohama, take the Minatomirai Line to Minatomirai, then walk to The Westin and go up to 23F. Allow time for the hotel elevator.
Rarity in the local market
A hotel tasting menu centered on a dedicated wood-fired grill is more specialized than a conventional steakhouse. Yokohama has other fine-dining and grill restaurants; no exclusivity is claimed.

Sources & assessment method

Prices describe the listed meal or closest current equivalent, not a guaranteed bill or a reconstruction of the historical visit. Tax, service, drinks, supplements and required admission are stated where verified. Official menus and booking rules are prioritized; major platforms provide cross-checks, and conflicting or historical prices are identified rather than averaged. Reservation labels reflect documented policy and access conditions; no live-date availability was measured. Rarity is an editorial comparison of cuisine and dining format in the stated local market, using documented alternatives rather than a market census. It is not taste, prestige, measured supply or a count of restaurants; price, views or booking conditions alone do not establish rarity.

Evidence limits: High on current menu prices and reservation policy. Actual historical bill is from Ken’s own review, not platform research.

  • Official booking / TableCheck — Standard short tasting ¥12,500 and Smoke & Fire ¥18,500, tax/service inclusive; beef supplements, public seat-only booking, 2-hour limit and 10-day chef-speciality lead time.
  • Official Iron Bay — Dedicated wood-fire cuisine, local ingredients, hotel restaurant identity.
  • Ikyu — 6-minute Minatomirai access, 23F location, ¥15,000–¥19,999 dinner guide and 96 seats; public booking.
  • Tabelog — Independent steak / grill listing and restaurant details; complements Ikyu and venue menu rather than determining an average score.

A Romantic Restaurant Above Minato Mirai

The room feels elegant without becoming formal or uncomfortable. Dark tones, warm wood, Japanese-inspired details and floor-to-ceiling windows create a sophisticated setting. Tables are spaced well enough for private conversation, while the city lights provide a natural backdrop. For couples celebrating a birthday, anniversary or simply planning a memorable date, the evening setting is the strongest reason to choose Iron Bay.

Service was attentive and well paced throughout our visit. The atmosphere is luxurious, yet relaxed enough to focus on the person across the table. That balance makes Iron Bay especially well suited to dating.

The Wood-Fire Dinner Experience

Iron Bay is The Westin Yokohama’s signature grill, centered on seasonal meat, seafood and vegetables prepared with wood fire. Our menu moved through delicately presented seafood, warm bread, vegetables, fish, lobster and a deeply caramelized meat course. Menus change seasonally, so these photographs show our personal dinner rather than a guaranteed current course. The early courses were refined and restrained. A scallop presentation had a silky texture and a lively balance of richness and acidity. The glossy seeded bread was warm and satisfying, while the seasonal vegetable course showed the kitchen’s lighter side.

The seafood courses expressed the restaurant’s style most clearly. The grilled lobster offered natural sweetness and a gentle smoky edge. The wood-fire meat course brought the deepest roasted flavor of the night, with a charred exterior and tender center. Its sauce amplified the smokiness without overwhelming the meat.

Price and Value

Our final bill was ¥41,900 for two people, or about ¥20,950 per person. At the exchange rate used for this article, the total was approximately US$263 for two. Your cost will vary according to the current menu, drinks, supplements and exchange rate. This is a special-occasion restaurant, not a casual dinner. Still, the high-floor view, careful service, paced courses and refined hotel setting create a complete evening. For couples who value atmosphere as much as the menu, the price is easier to understand. My CARVAAN Bay Yokohama review offers another dinner overlooking Minato Mirai, with kebabs and Ghazal Beirut alongside the night skyline. For more ideas, explore my Yokohama dining reviews.

Ken’s Verdict

Iron Bay at The Westin Yokohama is an excellent romantic dinner choice in Minato Mirai. The room is striking, the night view adds a sense of occasion, and the wood-fire menu moves confidently between seafood and meat. I recommend making an evening reservation and requesting a window seat, while remembering that seating requests depend on availability.
