Soup Curry Guide: What to Order and Where I Eat Near Tokyo

Soup curry is a useful change of pace from a thick Japanese curry sauce: the spiced broth, vegetables and larger pieces of meat or seafood each have room to stand out. For a complete restaurant example, start with my Syukur review in Musashi-Kosugi, Kawasaki.

What makes soup curry different?

The first difference is the broth. At Syukur, the curry is aromatic and fluid rather than a thick roux-based sauce. Vegetables, seafood and chicken bring their own textures to the bowl, with rice served alongside. The full review explains the broth and the turmeric rice I order with it.

Soup curry is associated with Hokkaido, but the restaurant covered here is in Kawasaki. Use the address in the review when planning your visit; “near Tokyo” describes access, not the city where the restaurant is located.

My regular order at Syukur

I usually choose seafood soup curry with an extra bone-in chicken leg. On the visit covered in the review, I also added natto. The bowl combines seafood, vegetables and egg with the slow-cooked chicken, while the turmeric rice gives the broth something to soak into.

How to approach your first bowl

  • Choose a base and main ingredients that appeal to you, then check the available additions.
  • Start with a moderate spice level unless you already know the restaurant’s scale.
  • Decide on the rice portion separately from extra toppings; the complete combination matters.
  • Treat natto as an optional addition if you enjoy its distinctive taste and texture.

Comparing it with other curries

For the clearest comparison, think of the thick, roux-based Japanese curry commonly served over rice. Soup curry has a more fluid broth and often keeps its larger ingredients visually separate. Indian cuisines include many different curry styles, so a single “thick Indian curry versus thin Japanese soup curry” rule would be misleading.
